Airlift Water Pumps
Pumping Water by the Airlift Pumping Method
AIRLIFTING works with a windmill or any air compressor | related page |
If a well casing is so small (3 inches or less) that you cannot put a pump down it, you can pump water out of the well by sending an airline down, and the rising bubbles will lift the water to the top.

Pumping Water by the Airlift Method by Orin Kenzie, Alberta Agriculture, Lethbridge, Alberta
The following information may be of help to those planning such an airlift water pump installation.
The airlift water pumping system has been used for many years, and many well drilling outfits are used to pump and develop water wells. They are easy to install and are not damaged when sand is pumped with the water. Airlift operates by the injection of compressed air into the water inside of a discharge pipe, at a point below the water level in the well. The injection of the air results in a mixture of air bubbles and water, which being lighter in weight than water outside the discharge pipe, forces the air/water mixture up.
Two critical factors in airlift water pumping are:
-- 1. the submergence of the air line; and
-- 2. the size of discharge line.

Submergence always means the depth of air line below the pumping level, rather than the static water level in the well. Best performance occurs when approximately 60% of the airline is submerged. If the percent of submergence is too low, the system will not work.
The piping assembly used for airlift water pumping consists of a vertical discharge pipe and a smaller air pipe. See Figure 1. A foot piece that breaks the air into many small bubbles improves the efficiency of the airlift.
A foot piece can be made by drilling a number of small holes (1/16") in a short piece of copper tubing (1/2") and attaching it to the lower end of the air line. The part of the tube with the holes should extend at least two feet into the discharge pipe. The energy that is available to operate the airlift is that contained in the compressed air. Compressed air is then forced down the air pipe and released inside the discharge pipe.

Pump water with your air compressor using AIRLIFTS air injection pump. Whether you have a regular house electric, solar ac-dc, or gas compressor and can meet the submergence ratios, AIRLIFT will work for you.

The AIRLIFT air injection pump has no moving parts so there is nothing to wear out, AIRLIFT Technologies is so confident in the durability of its air injection pump that we guarantee it for life under normal use. The air injection pump can lift water as high as 315', produce 1-20 gallons per minute depending on compressor size and lift, you can place the compressor up to 1/4 mile from well, fits in well casings as small as 2" or 4" well casings with existing electric submersible.

How does air lift water?
Air lifts water by a combination of submerging the pump to a predetermined depth and injecting air into the pump casing, mixing with water, creating hydro-static pressure, forcing the water-air mixture as high as 300 feet.
What is the predetermined depth?
Also known as the submergence ratio:
0 to 50 ft. lifts = 30% minimum submergence below water level.
50 to 150 ft. lifts = 70% minimum submergence below water level.
150 to 300 ft. lifts = 50% minimum submergence below water level.
What if I have a shallow well and can't meet the submergence ratio?
Then the AIRLIFT positive pump should be used. NOT the AIRLIFT air injection pump.
What size does my well casing need to be?
The AIRLIFT injection pump can accommodate well casings as small as 2" ( 2 inches).
What kind of piping do I need to use ?
Common schedule 40 PVC or flexible poly hose.

How long does the compressor operate before needing to be rebuilt?
6 to 8 years.

What maintenance is required?
Change the compressor oil and clean the air filter annually.

How much wind do I need?
4-6 mph cut in speed, 7-8 mph pumping begins, 10-15 mph ideal pumping conditions.

Air Lift Pump:
The Air Lift Pump
is a type of deep well pump, sometimes used to remove water from mines. It can also be used to pump a slurry of sand and water or other “gritty” solutions.

In its most basic form this pump has NO moving parts, other than an air compressor.
The efficiency of the air compressor is a prime factor in determining the overall efficiency of the pump.

Increased efficiency in the pump itself can be achieved - but with added complexity.

Compressed air is piped down a shaft. The air then returns up a Discharge Pipe carrying water with it. The pump works by “aerating” the water in the discharge pipe.
The added air lowers the specific gravity of the fluid mixture. Since it is lighter than the surrounding water, it is pushed upwards.

This type of pump can lift 20 to 2000 gallons per minute, up to about 750 feet. The discharge pipe must be placed deep into the water, from 70% of the height of the pipe above the water level (for lifts to 20 feet) down to 40 percent for higher lifts.
