The Block is fortified with several billion bacteria colonies per gram six (6) enzymes all selected and designed for their waste and green water degrading properties. It is among the highest bacteria counts presently available to the water gardening market today. Most freeze-dried bacteria products tend to have much higher bacteria counts than liquid products because the bacteria is sprayed onto a medium, often a wheat bran product. Liquid bacteria products are formulated in, a liquid solution that keeps the bacteria in a somewhat active state. Dry bacteria products remain dormant until they come in contact with water, so the chance for survival in a dry form is greatly enhanced.When applied to an aquatic system it will begin to multiply exponentially and will begin to pull out nutrients and harmful wastes from a pond. These nutrients and wastes usually include organic material, fish wastes, dead plant life, leaves and many-other organic materials. These “wastes" are, for all intent and purposes, bacteria food. The six enzymes contained in this product will perform the initial work to begin the breakdown of the waste. The enzymes will act as a “saliva” to breakdown the bulk of the waste so the bacteria can perform there function more easily and efficiently. Once the wastes have been. consumed the only bi-products that are excreted by the bacteria are harmless carbon dioxide and water. Another small benefit that the bacteria contribute to the pond is that the pH can be lowered with the release of carbon dioxide in the same manner that fish respiration will lower pH.
It works to clear green water by removing the suspended algae's food source. It will remove the nutrients in the water that the algae need to survive, such as ammonia, nitrite nitrate and others. Once the nutrients are removed the algae dies and the bacteria will utilize the dead and decaying algae as a food source. A common misconception is that bacteria will eat living algae when in fact bacteria will not consume anything that is living.
Suspended particles (being much smaller) are much easier to remove than masses of “clumped up” stringy algae.
It is designed to perform the functions that the naturally occurring bacteria cannot perform. Most naturally occurring bacteria cannot keep up with the constant load of organics and algae entering the pond.
As with any living creature bacteria need certain environmental parameters to survive. Therefore, it is necessary to have the following characteristics present in a pond before treatment to ensure the proper function of this product:

Excessive algae growth is generally caused by an overabundance of their food source (such as nitrogen and phosphorus). Algae grows on these nutrients that are in your pond. Bacteria competes for these nutrients and therefore this helps keep algae in check."My pond smells, can bacteria help"?
Pond odors are generally caused by an excess of ammonia and sulfur. Since beneficial bacteria accelerate the natural nitrogen cycle, ammonia is more quickly converted into nitrite and then into nitrate, eliminating the release of ammonia.
Note: Aeration adds oxygen to pond water. Aerobic bacteria need oxygen.
