SMART UPGRADES Bob Mitchell has inserted a Thrust
Bearingbetween the "pivot tube" and the top of the Koenders "Blue
Thing" -- a bright idea to allow the air compressor | windmill blades
| and tail fin | to turn with less friction on the Koenders Windmill Tower.
Any thrust bearing will do with an I.D. identical to the tube. They come
either sealed or open. Open is better for greasing. They cost about $16.00
each.
A sealed Thrust Bearing can be place between the
Blue
Thing and windmill assembly.

| Needle roller and cage thrust assemblies are complements of
small diameter needle rollers arranged in a spoke-like configuration. Needle
rollers are equally spaced by means of a cage whose web section separates
the rollers and provides guidance to keep them tracking in an orbital path.
The
purpose of these assemblies is to transmit a thrust load between two relatively
rotating objects while greatly reducing friction.
Bob Mitchell has also attached a Rotating Union The Rotating Union attaches to the bottom of the pivot tube,
and the air line attaches to it. It allows the Windmill to turn, while
the airline stays in place. Bob Mitchell says: "The union is my upgrade;
it might not be for everyone. For me it is exactly what I needed. For projects
were the Windmills are not under constant supervision this might work for
other sites. It may be a good idea to include a Rotating Union with all
Koenders Windmill kits."

Gary Hohman at O'Day DiscovDiscoveryLodge.htmlery
Lodge in Evansville, Indiana has put up a Koenders Windmill for one of the ponds in the city park.
He has taken Bob Mitchell's lead, and contacted the The Deublin
Company and purchased a Deublinrotating union from a local distributor.

My windmill works great --
A few things I have had to do different than adding the thrust
bearing and the rotating union. First off, the tubing supplied with the
windmill I ran it 250 feet to the pond bottom most of the tubing ran thru
a swamp to get to the pond. Every week some animal put small holes in the
tubing, and burring was not an option, so I ran nylon tubing and no animal
I know will be able to cut that nylon. Have never had a problem again.
The second thing is these check valves; every year about this
time (November), I am replacing the output check-valve. My theory is that
a piece of dirt or what every is allowing air to escape from the system
and being that it is closed system and if the system is working right the
alcohol in the freeze tank will stay in there forever or until the line
needs de-icing, but with the air escaping the alcohol vapor some how maybe
degrades the check valve even more? At that point a freeze tank full of
alcohol will be empty in about a week. How about a double check valve?
Last winter the windmill worked flawless. The pond froze solid
except for a 10 ft. circle of thin ice around the center of the air stone
discharge; the fish I put in the fall had grown from 1-2in to 4-5in in
about 7 months.
I have no other pictures than the one I sent you, but next time
I’m going up and it is a nice day I will take some and sent them off to
you and will take pictures next spring and
summer and send them to you also.
