Methane Recovery Methane recovery is the process of trapping methane gas from
manure and other organic materials. The process eliminates odor and captures
energy that can be used for electricity and heat on livestock operations.

Methane, or landfill gas, is formed as refuse slowly decomposes.
Landfill gas is comprised of approximately 55% methane and 45% carbon dioxide.
Methane is the primary component of the natural gas commonly used of cooking
and heating in homes. In the past, the gas was flared off into the atmosphere,
wasting a valuable resource and potentially causing an environmental hazard.
Now, the gas is collected and converted into electricity. The electricity
is delivered directly to MidAmerican Energy's power grid, where it is distributed
to area homes and businesses.

| Anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge produces a useful fuel -- methane
gas -- which can be burned for heat or electrical production at wastewater
facilities. Sewage sludge, before it can be disposed of, must be thickened.
A further step, anaerobic digestion, can produce a fuel that can reduce
energy costs in wastewater treatment. Methane gas recovered from the
digestion process can be collected, stored and used as a fuel.

| It might surprise a lot of people, but manure can be nearly odor
free. And it could make you money! New advances in methane digestion
technology are finding success. Several different types of anaerobic digesters
have recently been installed in Iowa with assistance from the USDA-Natural
Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and AgSTAR.
AgSTAR is a voluntary program of the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency that is designed to encourage the widespread use of livestock
manure as an energy source.
