The Institute For Solar Living
The Institute for Solar Living is dedicated to the belief that education will help bring about the changes in consciousness and behavior necessary to create an environmentally sustainable future.

The Institute for Solar Living is a 501(c)3 nonprofit educational organization. The Institute was originally born as a part of Real Goods Trading Corporation, offering educational workshops since 1992. Since its inception, Real Goods has always understood the importance of education in encouraging people to choose information and lifestyles that preserve the environment. Now as a completely separate nonprofit organization since 1998, the Institute for Solar Living is able to focus solely on education and to greatly expand upon many of the educational programs originally started by Real Goods Trading Corporation.

The Solar Living Center
The Solar Living Center, a 12 acre demonstration site for renewable energy and sustainable living technologies, also serves as the headquarters for the nonprofit Institute for Solar Living. The Solar Living Center is located 95 miles north of San Francisco on Highway 101, approximately a two hour drive from the Bay Area.

Our Recommendation | An innovative windmill company for electricity

Wind Harvest Company
is a California-based company that makes Windstar™, a unique vertical axis, straight-bladed wind turbine for the production of electricity. With over 20 years of experience in research, development, and operation of our patented design, we provide excellent, reliable energy production by harvesting the wind. Windstar makes financial sense.

The Windstar Turbine™ is both cost- and performance-effective. With an annual average windspeed of 15 MPH and a 59KW capacity, it is capable of generating 100,000 KW hours of electricity each year, which translates into approximately $1000 per installed kilowatt.

Wind Harvest Company has developed a very interesting type of wind turbine, called the WindStar, wich has straight blades moving around a vertical axis. The turbines provide cheap, clean, clever, safe and silent energy from a renewable source. Now that's exactly the kind of energy we would love to use to ‘toast our toast, light our bulbs or surf the web, instead of going with companies that run through fossil fuel like there’s no tomorrow’!

The Greening Of The White House
The Greening of the White House is a series of environmental upgrades occurring at the White House complex, which consists of the Executive Residence, the Old Executive Office Building, and the White House Grounds. After a feasibility study in July 1993, measures began to be implemented to reduce pollution, save energy, protect water quality, improve comfort, and save money at the White House.

Solstice: http://solstice.crest.org/environment/gotwh |
The CD-ROM consists of a documentary of the actions that the White House has taken to date, as well as a wealth of general information on energy and environment topics. The general information includes many actions you can take yourself to improve the environment while making your home and office more comfortable, healthy, safe, and productive, and less expensive to maintain.

"We're going to identify what it takes to make the White House a model for efficiency and waste reduction, and then we're going to get the job done. I want to make the White House a model for other federal agencies, for state and local governments, for business, and for families in their homes. Before I ask you to do the best you can in your house, I ought to make sure I'm doing the best I can in my house." President Clinton - April 21, 1993

President Clinton's "Greening of the White House" program is replacing traditional building fixtures with new energy-efficient ones that pay for themselves in a surprisingly short time. You can do the same at your home or business.
