Spring Creek Aquatic ConceptsI know it says Fishery Biologist by my name. I could have called myself an aquatic ecologist or aquatic biologist. I don't really go for the fancy titles, personally. The point I am trying to make is I deal with all aspects of aquatic habitats, from where the rain falls on the top of the mountains to the bottom of the lake. No matter what your goals are for a pond, we have it covered. Fish ponds, spawning creeks, duck ponds, swimming ponds, garden ponds: you name it and we can design it. You can have clear water that is weed free, or you can have any level of plants in your pond. We can even create a pond that will stay warmer than usual in the summer months.
We work with the natural environment rather than attempt to fight it. In order to maximize success in ecosystems that humans do not completely understand, our philosophy is to incorporate a strategy called emulation. We identify the 'tools' that the environment needs for its health, then we provide them. This has two benefits: 1) It is often less expensive to solve environmental challenges using these techniques instead of traditional 'control' techniques, and 2) we can actually attain results that go beyond what our current science can explain.
Getting it right
Over the life of your habitat our methods are usually more economical. There may be times when chemicals can be cheaper if you don't mind an artificially blue-green pond. We believe that chemicals and equipment in a pond are signs of poor habitat design. Consider when you pay $50 per gallon for chemicals, and even more for application labor, that, while they do eliminate algae, they do not eliminate the nutrients that cause the algae problem in the first place. You then need to continually apply chemicals, which only put a Band-Aid over a wound that never heals. Our first choice is to design healthy habitat the first time around rather than constantly treating the sick patient. We look to the root of all the threats to your habitat. Usually these come from upstream. Do not be surprised if we spend more time outside your lake rather than in it when we develop solutions for you. Your habitat is part of an entire watershed. That watershed needs to be considered to deliver successful results. Maybe that watershed is a thousand acres, or maybe it is a thousand square feet between the pond and the putting green. We have solutions for both.
