Sulfur Mountain Project
Nearly half of all households in the United States get their water from ground water wells. There are about 15 million water wells in the United States alone, and 400,000 new wells are drilled every year. Hydrogen sulfide contamination in well water, characterized by a “rotten egg” smell, is the second most complained about contaminant by homeowners. Estimates of the number of hydrogen sulfide contaminated wells from data obtained by the EPA, are as high as 30%.
Rita Rivest | Home Owner:I moved to Ojai, California from Manhattan a year ago, and did not pay any attention to the most important word in my address - "Sulphur" Mountain Road.
Living in New York, I thought that I understood what the word "discomfort" meant. I was wrong. There is nothing worse than the smell of sulfur in your water.
Fortunately, I hooked up with some folks who feel the same way that I do, and they were able to track down the antidote.
Thank God for "the aerator" -- it sits by the side of my water tanks and does the most remarkable thing - it eliminates that miserable odor. I feel extremely grateful for this extraordinary find and can now live happily on my mountain top without any fear of not being able to harness the "sulfur monster." It's done!

On Sulfur Mountain, Rita uses a Koenders Electric Aerator to Aerate her well water.
The Koenders Electric Aerator sends air through two air lines to two (2) Aeration Stones set at the bottom of each of her two standing (galvanized steel) water tanks. Aeration of the well water in the tanks removes hydrogen sulfide caused by bacteria deep in the mountain at her water well site. The hydrogen sulfide grabs onto the oxygen molecules in the water and is released into the atmosphere through a vent at the top of each tank.
The aerated water is sent into her pressurized (blue) water tanks, and then through a charcoal filter at the house down the hill.![]()
The Koenders Electric Aerator is housed in a RED all-weather box as seen in the photo above. A T-Connector is used to send one air line to each Aeration Stone set at the bottom of each of the two (2) galvanized steel standing water tanks. When not being photographed, the Koenders electric Aerator is also covered by the plywood box seen in the foreground of the photo above. That nine inch disk on top of the plywood box is a spare Aeration Stone put there for the photo -- without a foot valve attached.![]()
Flush Out The Tanks. Every two (2) weeks or so, water is released from valves at the bottom of each tank to flush out iron oxide and other metals that fall to the bottom of the standing water tanks. Aeration is a simple and effective way to improve well water quality.![]()
Again -- The hydrogen sulfide grabs onto the oxygen molecules in the water and is released into the atmosphere through a vent at the top of each tank -- note the black curved PVC pipes at the top of each tank. The aerated water then goes into her pressurized (blue) water tanks and is sent through a charcoal filter at the house down the hill.
