| Self-Relaint Living | Press Release Backwoods Home Magazine is giving away its E-issue
Backwoods Home Magazine is pleased to announce it
is now offering the electronic version of it's bi-monthly print publication
as a free download to everyone who visits their popular website http://www.backwoodshome.com/index.html
|
BHM-E, as the electronic issue is known, is produced
in Adobe Acrobat Portable Document Format (PDF).
This format can be read on any computer using the free Adobe Acrobat
Reader, which is available from Adobe at http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
|.
For those who would like to visit or to link directly
to the BHM-E page,
the URL is http://www.backwoodshome.com/
|
Each issue will remain online for four months.
Both the current issue and the previous issue of the magazine will be available
online. Asked why BHM has decided to give away the electronic issue when
it previously charged $10 per year for it, publisher Dave Duffy replied:
"It is a calculated risk, a gamble I have been considering for about six
months. I'm betting that making the magazine free on the Internet, via
what we call our "E-issue," will greatly broaden our readership base without
significantly reducing the demand for our paid print magazine. I'm also
betting that this increased readership will buy enough of our back issue
paper anthologies and CD-ROMs to offset the loss in revenue we'll experience
from giving the e-issue away."
"There is also a possibility of foreign sales.
There are a lot of Canadians who would like to subscribe to us, but the
Canadian government makes it prohibitively expensive to sell them a subscription,
or to even put the magazine on the Canadian newsstands. So now they'll
be able to get it free, and I think they too will buy anthologies and CD-ROMs
from us. We also get inquiries from countries like Germany and Australia
about how they can get the magazine, but of course they don't want to pay
$30 or $40 a year postage to mail it to them. So now they can get the magazine
free for a local telephone call, and they can see what great information
it has."
Backwoods Home Magazine is written for people who
have a desire to pursue personal independence, self sufficiency, and their
dreams. It offers how-to articles on owner-built housing, independent energy,
gardening, self-employment, health, country living, food production, cooking
and recipes and other topics related to an independent and self-reliant
lifestyle. It is published six times a year from their home office in Gold
Beach, on the Oregon coast.
The BHM website, www.backwoodshome.com, strives
to continue the mission of the print publication on the Internet. Visitors
to the site will find articles from the current issue of the magazine as
well as hundreds of articles from past issues, all freely available. Other
popular features include a newsletter, jokes, letters to the editor, free
desktop wallpaper, classified ads, a large links page, and an active Readers'
Forum where participants trade information and help or just discuss current
issues affecting independence and self-reliance.
