Water Quality & Shrimp Farming | Texas | related story | Environmental Defense Fund site
Aquaculture was once actively encouraged by the state, but many Texans are now concerned about the industry's release of wastewater and of exotic shrimp species and diseases to coastal bays and estuaries. This pollution can diminish sport-fishing opportunities and land values near farms. Responding to criticism from citizens, businesses, environmentalists, and the legislature, state agencies have begun working with shrimp farmers to regulate discharges and improve environmental performance.
