Sustainable agriculture refers to an agricultural production and distribution system that:

Achieves the integration of natural biological cycles and controls,
Protects and renews soil fertility and the natural resource base,
Optimizes the management and use of on-farm resources,
Reduces the use of nonrenewable resources and purchased production inputs,
Provides an adequate and dependable farm income,
Promotes opportunity in family farming and farm communities, and
Minimizes adverse impacts on health, safety, wildlife, water quality and the environment.
SAN is the communications and outreach arm of the
-- Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) program.

SARE is a U.S. Department of Agriculture-funded initiative that sponsors competitive grants for sustainable agriculture research and education in a  regional process nationwide. SAN is dedicated to the exchange of scientific and practical information on sustainable agriculture systems using a variety of printed and electronic communications tools.

SARE works to increase knowledge about -- and help farmers and ranchers adopt -- practices that are economically viable, environmentally sound and socially responsible. To advance such knowledge nationwide, SARE administers a competitive grants program first funded by Congress in 1988.

Water Quality & Shrimp Farming | Texas | related story | Environmental Defense Fund site
Aquaculture was once actively encouraged by the state, but many Texans are now concerned about the industry's release of wastewater and of exotic shrimp species and diseases to coastal bays and estuaries. This pollution can diminish sport-fishing opportunities and land values near farms. Responding to criticism from citizens, businesses, environmentalists, and the legislature, state agencies have begun working with shrimp farmers to regulate discharges and improve environmental performance.
